# About Umesh Malik

Software Engineer & AI Builder · Expedia Group

## Who I Am

I'm **Umesh Malik**, an AI engineer and software developer based in **Gurugram, Haryana, India**. I build AI-powered products, GenAI applications, and scalable software systems. My work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and production engineering — turning foundation models into real products that work at scale.

## The AI Focus

I'm deeply invested in the AI revolution. I build with LLMs, design RAG pipelines, architect agentic workflows, and explore how generative AI transforms software development. From prompt engineering to autonomous agents, I'm hands-on with the tools shaping the future: Claude, OpenAI, LangChain, vector databases, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

I write extensively about AI on my [blog](https://umesh-malik.com/blog) — covering model comparisons, practical GenAI techniques, and the evolving landscape of AI engineering. My goal is to help developers and teams adopt AI effectively and build products that matter.

## Engineering Foundation

Before going deep on AI, I built my foundation in production engineering across three enterprise companies. This background is what makes my AI work different — I don't just prototype, I ship.

At **BYJU'S**, I built payment systems processing $10M+ monthly transactions with 99.9% uptime. Promoted from Associate Engineer to Module Lead in just 8 months. At **Tekion Corp**, I rebuilt the Finance & Insurance module serving thousands of automotive dealerships worldwide. Now at **Expedia Group**, I lead development on the Workflow Orchestration Platform — the kind of infrastructure that AI-driven automation will transform next.

## What Drives Me

- **Building AI Products:** Turning LLMs and generative AI into production-grade applications that solve real problems
- **Scalable Systems:** Engineering the infrastructure that AI applications need to work reliably at scale
- **Sharing Knowledge:** Writing about AI, mentoring engineers, and helping teams adopt GenAI effectively

## Currently

- **Building:** AI-powered products with LLMs, RAG, and agentic workflows
- **Working at:** Expedia Group — Workflow Orchestration Platform, the foundation for AI-driven automation
- **Writing about:** GenAI, LLM applications, model comparisons, and the future of AI-augmented development
- **Experimenting with:** Claude, MCP, autonomous agents, multi-modal AI, and AI-native development with Cursor
- **Reading:** Research papers on LLM reasoning, tool use, and retrieval-augmented generation

## Highlights

- Published 20+ articles on AI, GenAI, and software engineering
- Built production RAG pipelines and agentic AI systems from scratch
- Fastest promotion at BYJU'S — Associate to Module Lead in 8 months
- Shipped payment systems processing $10M+ monthly with zero critical incidents over 12 months
- This portfolio is AI-optimized: structured data, llms.txt, RSS feeds, and 98+ Lighthouse scores
